2017 Art Trail

I am interested in creating a sense of life and movement to my thrown vessels, using alteration of the form and application of colours , glazes ,sgraffitto and brushwork to achieve that effect.I use different clays and different firing schedules , mostly stoneware large dishes and bowls designed for use.I also make hand crafted sculptural tiles with drawn human figures and Raku fired as decorative pieces ,the smoke and lustrous glazes enhance the movement of the forms across the tile`s surface.

After a recent trip to Japan I have been drawn to working with more reference to the wildlife of our own British Isles, incorporating birds in my designs still with the emphasis on movement.

I have been working in clay for more than thirty years in a variety of situations.

My overriding interest is the physical form in movement demonstrated in clay. Essentially, it is the life force that drives us, the inner rhythm of emotion translated into the physical outward expression through movement, which fascinates me.

In both my thrown and hand-built work there is an attempt to suggest fluidity and rhythm through style, colour, texture and firing. When throwing there is the expansion of the clay from the inert opening and expanding into functional form the surface of which is reminiscent to me of skin stretched over muscle. The moulded Body Tiles are an extension of this and are also informed through practising shiatsu for 20 years, with the observation of the balance of energies expressed through body language, voice and movement. The smoking and glazing gives a subtle emphasis to the body forms, shadowing the transitory glimpses of emotion in the individual being.
